气体活化也是果壳活性炭生成成品所必须要经过的一个活化过程。气体活化的过程其实是用活化气体与C发生氧化还原反应，侵蚀炭化物的表面，同时除去焦油类物质及末炭化物，使炭化料的微细孔隙结构发达的过程。通过气化反应，可使炭化料原来闭塞的孔开放原有的孔隙扩大孔壁烧失，某些结构经选择性活化而产生新孔的过程。孔隙的形成与C的氧化程度密切相关，在一定的活化烧失率范围内，活化气体与炭化料的所化反应程度越深，生产出的活性炭比表面积就越大，孔隙也就越发达，吸附性能就越好。
